Wind energy should not come with unnecessary material, infrastructure or environmental costs. Flag Turbines is developing a low-speed, modular turbine architecture designed to reduce those impacts while expanding where wind energy can be deployed.
Flag Turbines is focused on advancing sustainability through a wind turbine architecture designed around lower material intensity, modular construction and widely available recyclable materials. Our low-profile design can reduce the need for large concrete foundations and allows wind generation to be deployed across a broader range of locations.
Our turbines use ferrite magnets rather than rare-earth permanent magnets and avoid the large carbon-fiber composite blades used in many conventional wind turbines. Their modular construction is designed to simplify maintenance, component replacement, disassembly and end-of-life recycling, supporting a more circular approach to renewable energy infrastructure.
While Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) dominate the wind energy landscape, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) offer distinct architectural advantages that can make them particularly well suited to distributed, urban, rural and offshore applications. For Flag Turbines, those advantages also support a more sustainable and circular approach to wind energy, as outlined below.
At Flag Turbines, we prioritize bird safety. Our turbines feature significantly slower rotational speeds (20-30 rpm) and an easy-to-see silhouette, compared to the much higher rotational speeds of ‘propeller’ style turbines. Our innovative design minimizes collision risks.
